Remembrance of the Hero

Today is the holy day known as 'Ashura, which takes place on the 10th of Muharram in the Islamic calendar. On this day, Muslims remember the martyrdom of the hero Imam Husayn, who was killed after refusing to pledge allegiance to a ruler to whom he objected as described in H. Talat Halman's "The Knight of Faith:" Imam Husayn's Chivalry at Karbala.

Despite this event having taken place long ago in 680 AD, it has never ceased stirring the passion and emotions of those who commemorate it with pilgrimage, plays, poetry, and prayer. Rather than considering Imam Husayn as a hero belonging only to one particular faith and people, consider 'Ashura a dedication to all heroes and heroines in iconic form.
